There are 32 students in class VIII-A of SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik with details :
1. The number of men is 8 students and the number of women is 24 students.
For group work, students will be divided into eight groups and each group should consist one male student.
2. There are 6 ethnics in the class. They are Tobanese, Sundanese, Javanese, Simalungunese, Niasnese, and Karonese.
The teacher can use Bahasa Indonesia as national language when teaching English if the students find difficult to understand the meaning of words and instructions.
3. The students are mostly thirteen years old. They are in the formal operation phase now based on their age. They already begin to have the ability to coordinate two different cognitive abilities simultaneously or sequentially. For example, they are able to solve problems by using the basic assumptions that are relevant to the environment.
4. There are three religions in the class namely Muslim, Christian, and Catholic.
The students in the class also come from multicultural. Cultural diversity in the class should be responded and respected by teacher and students.
5. The students’ social status are 28 % children of entrepreneurs/traders, 22% children of private employees/BUMN, 16 % children of factory workers, 16 % children of farmers, 12 % children of civil servants and 6 % children of protestant clergymen. The assignments, which are provided, can be completed by all learners with diverse social economic background.
6. The students’ interests are 57 % on academic aspects, 25 % in sport activities, 9 % on music activities, and 9 % on skills aspect.
With the interest that has been identified, teacher should design activities that are in accordance with students’ interest. Teacher should improve students’ interest in learning, too. Indicator of students’ interest according to Slameto (2003) cited by Saswandi (2014) are:
a. Attention
1) Ask to the teacher about the material.
2) Look for other sources about the material or the lesson.
3) Concentrate while learning.
4) Focus while the teacher explains the material.
b. The Willingness
1) Try to do the difficult task.
2) Still learning although the teacher is not in the class.
3) Enthusiastic to follow the lesson.
4) Diligently read the English book.
c. Needs
Needs is a condition in the person of a student who driving him to certain activities in order to achieve a goal. For examples:
1) Learn English in order to succeed in a career.
2) The awareness to make their own notes while learning process.
d. Feelings happy or joyful feelings
1) Enjoy in doing the task or exercise given by the teacher at school.
2) Always enthusiastic to follow the lessons.
3) Take a note from the material.
e. Teaching Materials and Teachers’ Good Attitudes
1) Teachers’ attention makes the students motivated in learning English.
2) Students feel that learning English is fun.
3) Have a high enthusiastic to the lesson and the teacher.
4) Teachers’ explanation make the students understand about the lesson.
f. Participation
1) Ask if do not understand the material.
2) Always do the task given by the teacher.
3) Answer the question from the teacher.

Lesson Topic : Greeting card
Learning Objectives :
- To help students in identifying various kind of greeting cards
- To help students identifying the different pieces of information in each greeting card in the form of table
- To help students in learning and practicing vocabulary related to greetings for special days with correct pronunciation and word stressing
- To help students in designing or creating greeting card with the correct social functions, text structures, and linguistic elements.
Teaching Aids :
- Greeting cards for students to explore
- Blank cards for student creations
- Art supplies (pencils, crayons, markers, etc.)
- Creating a Greeting Card worksheet
Learning Activities :
1. Teacher show some greeting cards to students.
2. Students look closely into the greeting cards.
3. Students listen carefully to the teacher reading the sentences on greeting cards and repeat the sentences after the teacher.
4. Students discuss in their group about what the greeting cards say. They use table of analysis to identify different pieces of information from the greeting cards. This work will be done in their notebooks.
